Condoms are best bet to prevent spread of herpes virus.
Houston, TX 12/2/2005 Intro statement

There are over 80 variations of the herpes virus that have been identified, only
eight of them are responsible for the disease in humans. The most common of these
are the HSV-1 and HSV-2 forms. A couple of other common herpes viruses that affect
humans includes chicken pox (varicella zoster) and shingles (herpes zoster).

According to http://www.genital-herpes-simplex.com

As much as 25% of the adult population has genital herpes.

80% to 90% of the population has HSV-1 (cold sores / fever blisters).

75% of those infected with genital herpes do not even know it.

Male to male transfer of HSV-2 is the most efficient transmission route.

Male to female transmission is more efficient than female to male.

1 in 5 adult males has HSV-2 and 1 in 4 adult females has HSV-2.

There are approximately 1 million new cases of HSV-2 in the US annually.

Of the two most common forms of the herpes virus, HSV-1 and HSV-2 the
first form, HSV-1 or genital herpes is the most dangerous. It is transmitted
from one sexual partner to another. HSV-2 id generally associated with
fever blisters or cold sores.

There is no known cure for either of these forms of herpes but there are
prescription and natural treatments that can lessen the length and the
severity of an outbreak.

The best line of defense is to always use a condom during intercourse. A condom
is not 100% effective but it will greatly reduce the risk. One should also absolutely
not have sex during an outbreak during the time the \"Shedding\" process is taking
place.
